Many people reach out asking about EMDR therapy because they want relief from memories, anxiety, or experiences that still feel emotionally overwhelming. At the same time, it is very common to feel nervous about what EMDR might involve.
One of the biggest worries people often have is: “Will I have to dive straight into traumatic memories?”
The short answer is no.
At Lavender Lane Counselling, I approach EMDR therapy gently and collaboratively. Before we begin any trauma processing work, it is important that we build a sense of safety, trust, and emotional stability together.
EMDR Is Not About Flooding You With Trauma
Sometimes people imagine EMDR as immediately revisiting painful memories in intense detail. In reality, good EMDR work is carefully paced and guided.
The aim is not to overwhelm you or push you into something before you feel ready.
Many people seeking therapy have spent years coping by staying busy, emotionally shutting down, avoiding certain thoughts, or trying to push difficult feelings away. Moving too quickly can sometimes leave people feeling emotionally flooded rather than supported.
This is why preparation matters.
Building Safety and Trust First
In the early stages of EMDR therapy, we often spend time getting to know each other and building emotional resources before beginning any deeper processing work.
This might include:
• learning grounding techniques• finding ways to calm the nervous system• exploring what helps you feel safe and supported• understanding triggers and emotional responses• developing coping strategies for between sessions
For some people this stage is relatively short. For others, particularly those with complex trauma or long standing emotional difficulties, taking more time here can be an important part of the work itself.
Although some people notice shifts relatively quickly, meaningful trauma work often takes time, care, and a pace that feels manageable for the nervous system.
There is no “right” speed.
The Therapeutic Relationship Matters
EMDR is not simply a technique that is done to someone.
The therapeutic relationship is an important part of the process. Feeling emotionally safe, listened to, and understood can make a significant difference when working with painful experiences.
Many people find that trust develops gradually over time, and that is completely okay.
You do not need to arrive ready to talk about everything immediately.
You Remain in Control Throughout
One of the things I often remind clients is that EMDR is collaborative. We work together at a pace that feels manageable for you.
You are always free to pause, slow things down, or talk through what you are experiencing during sessions.
The goal is not to force memories to the surface, but to help the brain process experiences in a way that feels more manageable and less emotionally distressing over time.
